Limescale is an excellent thermal insulator; even a thin layer significantly impedes the transfer of heat from the element to the water. The boiler must therefore run for much longer periods to achieve the set temperature, spiking electricity consumption and driving up costs in communities as varied as Maidstone, Rochester, Dartford, and Ashford in Kent, and Essex towns like Colchester, Basildon, and Harlow.
The solution to this efficiency crisis lies in preventative maintenance, primarily regular descaling. This involves chemically or physically removing the limescale to restore the heating element’s surface area and thermal conductivity. This work is not just required in busy population centres like Brentwood, Grays, and Billericay in Essex, but also in smaller, widespread communities. The necessity for maintenance applies equally across all 32 London Boroughs: Bromley, Croydon, Ealing, Enfield, Haringey, Harrow, Havering, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Kingston upon Thames, Lambeth, Lewisham, Merton, Newham, Redbridge, Richmond upon Thames, Southwark, Sutton, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Wandsworth, and Westminster.
